PRESENTATION

The OBSERVATORY OF TRANSNATIONAL CORPORATIONS is an instrument at the service of citizenship and of the social organizations. The observatory is tanking charge of following and monitoring transnational corporations and their behavior in belonging to employment and work conditions, the environment, gender politics, and the social integration of native populations and underserved social groups.
As a result of globalization, transnational corporations have becomed privileged actors in the new social, political, and economic national and international setting, with the capacity to subordinate the policies of development of the countries and the situation of different social groups.

This situation has made the establishment of effective systems and mechanisms of regulation and control of the activities of these large corporations absolutely necessary.  This must be done to guarantee the rights of citizens and the protection of the environment that may be threatened by the immense power of these corporations. This regulation tries to strengthen the power of the national governments, whose operative and institutional capacities have been seriously debilitated by the policies applied as a result of the imposition of the Washington Consensus. These regulatory systems also try to widen and strengthen the role of social organizations in the monitoring and social vigilance in regards to the activities of these corporations.
In order to evaluate the CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBLITY of these companies, the Observatory suggests monitoring the corporation´s management and behavior with relation to financial strategies, competition, relationships with suppliers and clients, transparency of management, and the character of its interactions with the political and institutional system of the country.
The Observatory is working within the framework of the regulations by the United Nations concerning the companies’ social responsibilities.
As well it is working within the principals of Human Rights, the conventions of the International Labour Organization (ILO), the directives of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and the different agreements and international conventions of environmental protection and defence.
